In a devastating bus accident in Hamtic town, Antique province, at least 17 individuals lost their lives, with the death toll revised from an earlier count of 25. Governor Rhodora Cadiao clarified that the official count of victims as of December 6 is 28, while 13 perished on the spot, 3 at the emergency hospital, and 1 in Iloilo.
The incident involved bus No. 6289, traveling from Iloilo City to Culasi town, when its brake system allegedly malfunctioned around 4:30 pm. The bus plunged into a ravine, leaving over 50 passengers affected.
The provincial government assured support for the victims’ families, pledging to cover medical expenses and funeral assistance. Vallacar Transit Incorporated (VTI), the bus owner, reported the incident to the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB), prompting the suspension of 12 remaining vehicle units pending investigation. VTI committed to providing financial aid and covering medical and burial expenses for the affected passengers and their families. Company personnel were dispatched immediately to assist victims at the accident site.
